For the music lovers of Lahore who had heard his golden voice in films and on gramophone records, Kundan Lai Saigal’s visit to the city in December 1937 was a memorable occasion. It gave them the opportunity of a lifetime to hear him in person. As it happened, Saigal’s public performance in Lahore was his first and last. His arrival had been heralded by posters that had appeared all over the city. Saigal was to give a performance at the site of the Indian Exhibition, the largest of its kind to be held at Lahore in Minto Park, the plain outside Hazoori Bagh between the fort and the Ravi river.
